First Day of our new academic year

Another year of school life and a beginning of a new session has livened up classrooms and corridors of the school once again. It was a delight to welcome students back into the building. We could see a bit of nervousness and excitement on the first day as the students embark on their new academic journey with some familiar and new faces in the school.

The first day of the school started with an assembly. Our teachers and students gathered for the day to begin. As our regular classes have commenced, our students are attending the physical classes. The brief break had them missed their peer and classroom interactions. Hence, the glee of being back to school was evident in the faces of our students.

Way to go – Very Good Rai

Very good, like her name, she is synonymous with being meritorious and creative in the class. She recently developed a game in Sprites Lab for her coding class. When she designed the game, she was in Grade 5. She is in Grade 6 now after giving her finals two months back. Within a

A sprite lab is block-based programming where you can make simple animations and games with objects and characters.

Talking about the game, she has created three different characters, bees, a muffin, and a cartoon character. When you start playing the game, you have to follow the arrow key and move the cartoon character accordingly. You keep moving the left, right, up, and down keys to eating the muffin without touching the bee. If the cartoon character touches the muffin, you score. However, if the bee touches the cartoon character instead, the character falls and stays on the ground. Asking upon the concept, she said it lies in escaping the obstacles and reaching the destination unharmed.

Learning to code and programming is one such way to prepare students for the future and enhance their learning skills. Ever since the coding curriculum teaching started our students can be seen enjoying the computer classes more than ever. Like Very Good our other students have found learning to code fun and not just about computers. They told us it has helped them visualize the possibilities for how coding and technology can help solve problems and helps with logical thinking.

YouMe Farm

Maize is one of the most cultivated traditional crops during the summer (April). In April our teachers and students sowed maize seeds which have now grown into a beautiful farm. The best time to plant maize seeds is right after the rainfall starts. It is important to protect your crop and, for that you have to keep checking pests and keep weeding at times. Our students gets a hands on education to see and experience the process and the ecosystem.

As a fertilizer, we generally use goat manure. This manure contains nutrients that plants need for healthy growth. We will harvest the maize during July and August. We are also planning to plant different seasonal vegetables in the farm soon.

A New Beginning – Teamwork makes the dream work

Our faculty team is all set to start the year with a bang. The beginning of the session is the most hectic time of the year for the teachers. Generally, the new academic year in Nepal starts in April. The first few weeks are student enrollments, parents inquiry visits, and moreover basic adjustments in the school. But they say a strong team with collaborative problem solving leads to better outcomes. And we can’t agree more. It is so good to see people from various learning community coming together to create a good space for learning. And our teachers are paving the way to unlock new opportunities, overcome challenges, and gain experiences.

A Short School Visit from the teachers of YouMe School Khotang

A few weeks ago, YouMe School Khotang teachers made a short visit trip to YouMe School Biratnagar. YouMe School, Khotang Principal with six teachers, visited the school. Geographically talking Khotang is a hilly district of eastern Nepal. And Biratnagar is a metropolitan city that lies in Terai, a low plain in eastern Nepal. So, the climate, culture, and infrastructures are divergent. The visit came as an exploration, discovery, and first-hand original experiences in another school for the teachers.

The visit was followed by interesting sets of events with the teachers and students together.

Teachers of YouMe Khotang held several programs with the students from YouMe Biratnagar. A drama, musical instrument pratices, drawing, art and craft including many different extra curricular activities were organized in the school for a week. Sharing a knowledge joyfully without any expectations of returns is something that can be done only by the teachers.

Our students enjoyed performing various activities with teachers from Khotang. An academic environment that fosters collaborations is very beneficial in providing students with a wonderful educational experience. And in such an effort, our teachers also got an opportunity to gain insight and understanding of other cultures, and different perspectives in classrooms and build a network with students from diverse backgrounds.

Our teachers from Khotang loved exercising their professional ability and personal flexibility. It emphasizes the beauty of collaboration is to share the responsibility of teaching that prepares students to cultivate a global mindset.

Festival Fun and Facts

Ubhauli is a festival of Kirat communities of Rai, Limbu, Sunuwar etc. According to the Kirati tradition, the festival is celebrated before harvesting crops and praying for a good harvest. This is one of the biggest festivals in Kirat’s community. The festival coincides with Budhha Jayanti and is celebrated on the same day. This year it was on the 16th of May.

On this day, the Kirati people perform a special dance called Sakela Silli by forming a circle and worshiping the sakela shrine. They perform sakela to express their gratitude to nature. We can see people wearing traditional Kirat attire and traditional ornaments for this special occasion.
