Eye and Ear Screening

The purpose of any screening program is to detect potential problems before they become lifelong struggles for the children and parents. To address some of these issues our school ran eye and ear check ups in cooperation with an enthusiast doctor from Kathmandu.

Dr. Bhesraj Pokhrel, MBBS.

We had set up an open initial eyesight test where students recognized letters and their sizes to identify the visual problems. We had students participate from Grade 5 to 10 for the check-up. Visual screening initial assessments are helpful to indicate suspected vision problems that can impact students’ ability to learn in the long run. We have a comprehensive report on students’ eyesight records that will help us continuously observe students’ signs and symptoms. Besides, we can guide parents to receive proper visual screening to follow up care in case problem arises.

Ear and hearing check-ups are also as important as eyesight tests are for a human being. The doctor, Bhesraj had the appropriate apparatus required for the screening. He was helped and supported by our teachers in the field. Hence, the screening was accomplished with relative ease. There was a rush of activity but eagerness at the same time as students were excited to get into action and have their eyes and ears tested. The value of the screening is enriching when the correct diagnosis and treatment are referred if required. Therefore, we have detailed documentation of our student’s ear and ear tests record for future references and follow-ups.

YouMe Farm

The monitoring of crop growth and performance during developmental stage is very crucial. Keeping this in mind our students pay special attention and visit the farm on a regular basis. After planting various seeds of cabbage, radish, beans etc. they are taking charge of checking pests, weeds, or dieseases. Technically it is essential to have sufficient knowledge to be able to carry out certain farming skills but we encourage our students to work unhesitantly and enrich their experience. Meanwhile, we also make sure our teachers involved have certain knowledge in the farming so that they can guide our students growth and respond to their curiosity.

The organic experience has made them careful towards the environment and connects to the roots of traditional livelihood. It is amazing to see our kids take the responsibility of watering, cleaning, and grooming the farm, and learning life skills with so much zest is inspiring.

Entertaining Virtual Exchange with Jikkendojo

We had a fun collaboration with one of the famous Japanese youtubers, Jikkendojo recently. They believe in changing the world with a smile and has several entertaining vidoes on Youtube.  We had a 40 minutes virtual exchange session where they shared and learned about languages and greeting cultures of the respective countries.

The multifaceted activity also included dancing. Jikkendojo showed some of their famous dance movements in their song 1234 world peace song. They also exchanged some beautiful dance moments together. Besides, our students taught them some unique Nepali dance movements. Overall, it was a wholistic experience and our students expressed substantial interest and enthusiasm in learning foreign cultures and languages. We are grateful to this amazing opportunity.

<YouMe School, Biratnagar>

A very special visitors at school

This month we had very special guests Satoko Tabata and Dinesh Joshi visit our school. Satoko San is the CEO of Parks Global School and Dinesh San is the co-founder of YouMe Nepal also the board member of Parks Global School.

The role and functioning of schools are changing and so is what is expected of teachers. Teachers are the epitome of knowledge and inspiration. This increasing integration of education demands teachers to involve in more planning with the evaluative structure to adapt multicultural classrooms. To address these burning issues we launched our very own teacher’s training curriculum catering to teachers’ professional development. And to complete this successfully Satoko San and Dinesh San have made an invaluable contribution to the curriculum. And we were so thrilled to welcome them to our school in person.

Our teachers made the most out of their short visit to the school. They had two days of the small training session where they discussed the implementation of the pedagogy effectively with high potential benefits for teachers and students. The teachers exchanged very enlightening interactions on different topics of education globally. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet them who translated their personal experiences into an incredible learning moment for our teachers.

This month we also celebrated Naag panchami, where we worship snakes. This festival is a traditional worship of serpent Gods observed by Hindu people. Live snakes are also worhsipped on this day especially offering milk and it is performed with assistance of snake charmer.

Our school celebrated this festival with great enthusiasm. Teachers gave information about various snake species. Likewise, our teachers also explained the significance of snakes in the ecosystem and urge to protect the species. Students made some beautiful colorful sketches of snakes and wished happy naag panchami to everyone.

Shrawan-The Divine Month

Pashupatinath Temple

Shrawan, the 4th month in the Nepali calendar, is considered to be the holiest month that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This pious month holds a great significance to the devotees of Lord Shiva and offers prayings people to visit different temples of the Shiva. During this month, we can see especially Indian nationals travel mostly to pay reverence to Lord Shiva in Pashupatinath temple and Halesi Mahadev.

Halesi Mahadev Temple

Halesi Mahadev temple is in the Khotang district and is located just 5 km away from our YouMe School in Khotang. In the month of Shrawan large number of Indian piligrims flocked to the temple with their presence to worship Lord Shiva.

This entire month is an extensive religious month. People perform pujas (worship) and observe strict fasting on Mondays of the whole Shrawan month. The Mondays of this month are believed to be sacred and a favorite day of Lord Shiva. This auspicious month is especially dear to ladies as the religious belief states married women observe fast for their husband’s long life and prosperity. Whereas, unmarried women keep fast to get an ideal husband. Women also adorn beautiful red and green color sarees and bangles with Mehendi (Henna) application on their hands. The Shrawan month is celebrated with great admiration and respect and is presumed to bring happiness and good health by Lord Shiva’s blessings.
