<YouMe School, Khotang>
After more than 2 years, I visited YouMe School, Khotang. I was surprised to see so many new changes.
It was my first time to see the school building after the completion of the third floor. The computer lab was equipped with more computers and a highly talented computer teacher. Toilet was also clean. I was very delighted to see the beautiful school building where the future of more than 230 students is being shaped.
What made me happy the most was being able to meet highly motivated young teachers who had come from Kathmandu to be a part of our mission. These talented teachers had a strong sense of contributing to the society through education. In addition, they were multi-talented with skills ranging from creating YouTube videos, photography, playing guitars, frumset, piano to writing poems, songs and rapping. After meeting these teachers, personally, I strongly felt that the student’s future is in great hands.
Investiture Ceremony
The investiture ceremony is an important occasion where students are selected and delegated certain roles and responsibilities. Our school held an investiture program forming its much-awaited house divisions and captains selection. We have four houses. And four captains were elected. The event was presided over by the Principal.
Teachers and students built booths, ballot boxes, and polling stations. The elected students were voted by other students. The students patiently waited in the queue and voted for their preferred candidates. The elected candidates gave speeches on why they were chosen and capable of becoming the captains.
Left to right: First row – Roshan, Anamol, Welcome, Khamos, Bibek and Merisha
Second Row: Preshan, Susana and Hebindra
Soon after the voting ended, the votes were tallied. Thereafter, the winners of the Yellow, Green, Blue, and Red were announced and felicitated. Principal Sir congratulated the winners and exhorted them to uphold their values and responsibilities. The role of house captains is to lead and support their house students. They work closely with the teachers and provide ideas to support competitions. They also help and organize house-related activities. The ceremony was held with lots of enthusiasm and zeal.
The winners were:
Yellow House: Captain – Presan
Vice-Captain – Welcome
Green House: Captain – Deepa
Vice-Captain – Merisha
Blue House: Captain – Anamol
Vice-Captain – Roshan
Red House: Captain – Hebindra
Vice-Captain – Bibek
World Environment Day Celebration
World Environment Day is celebrated each year on the 5th of June. On this day, we celebrate nature and learn about the environment. Likewise, our students celebrated communing with nature and organized a small cleaning campaign around the neighborhood. Our students held a rally with placards and slogans with different environmental messages.
Students were excited to get an opportunity to explore nature through the activities while learning about the environment. Our students participated in a peaceful rally from the school to Holesung park. On the way back, our students started picking up wastes and plastics on the road and nearby. Our students are already a part of various activities relating to conserving the environment like tree planting, trash to treasure competition, recycling initiatives, waste reduction, and management.
It was a day full of positive and earnest efforts made by teachers and students to learn more about nature and how to protect it. This endeavor shows commitment to building a safer environment and planet for all creatures. We are committed to contributing to environmental sustainability in every way possible in the coming days.
Volunteering to Empowering Education
Sierra Humbert, a University of Cambridge student actually from Copenhagen, Denmark visited our YouMe School, Khotang. She was in Khotang for two days.
Share her experience in her own words.
Visiting YouMe School in Khotang was a great experience. In the morning of the first day, the students held a rally, received a warm welcome from the principal, and were introduced to the students.
I was taken to a studio room that runs classes focused on speaking in public, self-confidence, and English. From 5th, 6th and 8th grades, the students were enthusiastic and attentive and fully participated in all activities. In the afternoon, I worked with young children and played games to help them speak English.
Again, it was great to see all the students fully engaged in the activity and excited to learn. During the final free period, I enjoyed teaching different kinds of dance to each other (teaching the students ballet and teaching my favorite Nepalese dance). This was a great way to end the day.
On the second day, there was a Friday Poetry Recital event. Following another assembly which had some exercises to help the students warm up, everyone went to their separate classes and prepared performances, crafts, and games. The younger students improved their English through a quiz and I was impressed at the teacher’s creativity in motivating the students through challenges and prizes. For the higher grades, we enjoyed a showcase of student performances of songs, poems, and raps. Overall, I was especially inspired by the teachers’ commitment to the students’ learning, with thoughtfulness, creativity, and time taken to ensure that the students had a varied and exciting timetable. I was also impressed by how engaged the students were with all the activities. Overall, I had a lovely time at YouMe school and hope one day to return (hopefully next time with a view of the mountains!).
YouMe Farm Green House Project
Our students and teachers made a greenhouse for the Job Vocational subject project work at YouMe farm. Job vocational is a life skill subject that allows students to gain practical skills and experiences. It increases productivity and empowers individuals.
In this particular chapter of vocational activities, our students learned to do plantation, germination, fertilization, and pollination process of different plants such as tomatoes, radish, turnip, chilly, and cauliflowers.
Farming is one of the prominent sources of income not only in Khotang but in Nepal so learning the skills required in agriculture is very important. And we can see our students truly invested in the tasks and performing excellently.

Coding Contest
The first ever coding contest was held in YouMe School Biratnagar on the 2nd of June. The contest featured students from Grade Five to Nine. The vibe throughout the contest was of energizing and a positive competitive spirit. Our students performed and played with confidence and full of enthusiasm.
The contest showcased our student’s confidence in creating a video game infront of the audiences and explaining each line of code. We had 5 participants altogether. The contest was engaging and very inspiring as each students pelted out their best gaming moves one after one. The audience was enthralled to see such talents and determination.
After displaying a magnificent game the winner was announced. Finally, Krishna Shah from Grade 7 was declared the winner. He created a Flappy Bird game. His game had three characters flappy bird, a carrot (a source of energy), and cactus (as an obstacle). The player had to control the movement of the flying bird and when the flying bird consumes carrot its energy scores high and the bird gets bigger. Similarly, when it touches the cactus the bird dies, and the game gets over. Excitement marked the event and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the contest.
World Environment Day
YouMe School, Biratnagar also celebrated the world environment day with positive environmental messages painted beautifully on the placards and drawings. On June 5th our students and teachers keenly participated in activities that raised awareness about the importance of mother nature and the environment.
A small program was organized and our students took part in making posters, paintings, and writing slogans while acknowledging and reminding everyone to involve in environment-friendly activities.
Our students from Grade One, a bundle of talent enjoyed adorning flower pots with colors. Meanwhile, the teachers assisted the students and accompanied them patiently.
A student of Grade Four, Aayuna Rai, addressed the audience with an enlightening speech and gave an insight into the importance of the Environment Day. She requested to spread awareness regarding saving the environment and the earth. The event was conducted successfully with great and whole-hearted participation of our teachers and students.
Beat the heat
Biratnagar in the summertime is mostly very hot and humid. The usual temperature in Biratnagar is around 32°C-33°C in June and July. On the 17th of June, our teachers held a ‘Beat the heat day’ program that focused on making our small kids aware of the summer season and the things we do to protect ourselves. Our students from Grade Nursery, Junior KG, and Senior KG participated in the activity.
The students color the worksheet related to the summer season theme. The worksheet had fun and entertaining pictures of the activities we do in the summer. Besides, they learned how to be safe and protect themselves from the sun.
Our teachers beautifully manifested the concept of beating the heat in summer. Teachers had informed students to bring one item related to the summer theme from home. The items included sunglasses, an umbrella, sunscreen cream, juice, fruit, a water bottle, a fan, etc. Overall, our kids had a great time learning the facts about the summer and how we deal with the heat. Lastly, students and teachers enjoyed a fresh watermelon and called it a day.
